Along with family birthdays, going on holiday is perhaps one of the few excuses most of us make to root around in the back cupboard and dust off that old camera we spent  far too much money on a while back. We suddenly change our approach from racking up happy-go-lucky snapshots on our mobiles to bringing out some serious pieces of kit. We eagerly lug along assorted heavy lenses and fancy filters, all in the effort to capture the magic of a sparkling seashore, a romantic cocktail toast, or a million and one identical pictures of that oh-so singular sunset we could have sworn looked better in real life.

But when digging out the old camera, this is also often the time we rediscover last year’s memory card and re-live that wonderful holiday all over again – they don’t call them memory cards for nothing. If we are truly old-school perhaps there is even a film in there to be developed, and then we really get a thrill (or sometimes a shock!) discovering all over again an enchanting procession of special moments that we had all but forgotten.

If digital convenience has diminished the exquisite wait, the delighted surprise or the bitter disappointment of a freshly developed set of prints, it certainly hasn’t killed the distinctive look. Recent years have seen a glut of retro-photo apps – from Instagram to Android’s Retro Camera – and the archaic aesthetic has well and truly saturated our visual horizons, from advertising to social media.

In honour of this trend we thought we bring you some of the best Florida holiday snaps from yesteryear – we hope that you enjoy!

And while we are celebrating the wonders of holiday photography, we’d also really love to see some of your old holiday snaps too! Send us your favourites and we’ll feature the best ones on our blog – Florida Holidays Travel Blog!
